The Union Election Commission is organizing pre worksite capacity enhancement training (1/2024) for Staff Officers and the clarification on the Proportionate Representative (PR) System was held at the meeting hall of the UEC Office in Nay Pyi Taw on Wednesday.

In his opening speech, the UEC Chairman U KoKo said that the Proportionate Representative (PR) System will be exercised for the first time in Myanmar. It’s found out that the (First Past The Post – FPTP) system exercised in the previous elections has some flaws such as one party domination in the parliamentary affairs and the votes of minority parties’ voters went down to the drain. Since the multiparty democracy systemis exercised, only then the representatives from most of the parties include in the parliament, more interests of the country will enable to carry out.

By exercising PR system, the defects of FPTP system can be reduced in some extent and the representatives from several parties will have a chance to seat in the parliament according to the proportion gained in the election.

Out of UN member 193 countries, there are 111 countries which exercise the PR system. As Myanmar will exercise the PR system for the first time, all personnel need to read, study and practice repeatedly to be familiar with that system till the election. After clarifying PR system in Power point presentation by UEC member U ThanSoe, the trainees asked the questions and the event was concluded.
