Senegal opens UN regional headquarters near Dakar

Senegalese President Macky Sall on Thursday inaugurated a United Nations regional headquarters near the capital Dakar to house all UN operations in the country.

The United Nations House sits on a 13-hectare site in the new town of Diamniadio, some 18 miles from Dakar, and will also be dedicated to the wider region of West and Central Africa.  

The complex will house the 34 UN entities currently based in Senegal and their 2,400 employees, the organizers of the inauguration ceremony said. Work began on the project -- built by a private Senegalese company -- in 2019 with a cost of $291 million.
