A wildfire fueled by winds from Storm Ciaran has burned around 2,000 hectares in eastern Spain and forced 850 people to evacuate from four towns. Around 200 firefighters and soldiers from the army's emergency unit were deployed on Friday to try to extinguish the blaze near the village of Montichelvo in the coastal region of Valencia.
Wind gusts of up to 120 kilometres an hour were hampering efforts to battle the blaze. Spain was lashed by strong winds on Thursday as Storm Cieran battered Western Europe, causing at least 10 deaths including that of a 23-year-old woman who was fatally struck by a tree that toppled in Madrid.
