Venezuela's Machado wins opposition primary

Industrial engineer Maria Corina Machado declared victory in the Venezuelan opposition’s presidential primary on Monday and she quickly claimed victory as the voters’ choice.

The opposition held the contest to choose a unity candidate to face President Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 election with the amid pledges by the United States to roll back sanctions relief if the government fails to lift bans preventing some opposition figures from holding office.

Machado has been disqualified from running by Maduro's government over alleged irregularities when she was a lawmaker from 2011 to 2014.
