Heavy rains have caused a river in Guatemala's capital to burst its banks, killing at least six people and leaving 12 others missing, authorities say.

Six homes have been swept away by the swollen Naranjo River in Guatemala. The National Coordination for Disaster Reduction of Guatemala said a search and rescue operation was underway while its personnel were on the ground assessing the needs of the affected community.

About 43% of Guatemala’s urban population is living in informal settlements, according to the Population Reference Bureau of Guatemala.
