M6.1 quake in Colombia kills 1

A 6.1-magnitude earthquake hit central Colombia on Thursday, causing one death and severe damage.

Buildings shook and sirens sounded as thousands of panicked residents poured into the streets of the capital.The Colombian agency said the earthquake struck at 12:04 pm local time, with its epicenter in the town of El Calvario in the center of the country, 40 kilometers southeast of Bogota. It was followed by a 5.9-magnitude aftershock. Central Colombia is very seismically active and features one of the country's main geological faults.In 2008, a 5.5 magnitude quake centered in El Calvario left 11 people dead.
