Italy experienced scorching heat waves and wildfires amid surging temperatures that made July the world's warmest month on record, according to the scientists. UN chief Antonio Guterres said the planet is entering an "era of global boiling".

Scientists agree the extra heat is mainly linked to fossil fuel use. The Italian fire brigade said it has responded to more than 4,000 incidents linked to the extreme weather in the last few days. At least seven people are known to have died as a result of the severe weather events including floods.
