2023 monsoon tree planting ceremony: Aiming for sustainable development of forest resources

2023 monsoon tree planting ceremony was held at No.14 Yan Aung Myin forest reserve in Lewei Township of Nay Pyi Taw on Friday morning.

Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council Deputy Prime Minister Vice Senior General Soe Win attended the ceremony and planted gantgaw tree.

In his address, the Vice Senior General said that the ceremony aimed for sustainable development of forest resources, having better forest coverage area across the nation, conservation of ecosystem and public participation in the forest conservation tasks.

The Vice Senior General added that if looking back the country’s forest coverage area, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization's Forest Resources Assessment Report, there were 51.54 percent of the country's area in 2000, 46.96 percent in 2010, 42.92 percent in 2015 and 42.19 percent of the country's area in 2020.

Myanmar has a population of more than 55 million people and it is found that forest-based industries can be carried out well with the least environmental impacts depending on the nation’s size, land and weather conditions.

That’s why, for the sustainable development of natural forests of the nation and conservation of ecosystem, Myanmar Reforestation and Rehabilitation Programme (MRRP) is being implemented by drafting 10-year plan from 2017-2018 to 2026-2027.

This monsoon season, a total of 24.619 million trees including state-owned forest plantations are being established. He stressed the needs on establishing village firewood plantations, planting shady and wind-resistant trees, and conserving forests in cooperation with concerned departments and locals.

He emphasized on establishing 30 percent of the country's area as reserve and protected forests and 10 percent as natural conservation areas by 2030, greening and beautifying of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area in line with characteristic of the city and landscaping works.

The Vice Senior General also called for sustainable development of forest resources of the nation, preventive measures from natural disasters and mitigation of climate change and participation in forest conservation tasks by the entire people.

After that, the Vice Senior General planted gantgaw tree at the designated place. And then, the Secretary of the SAC, the joint secretary, Union Level personnel, Union Ministers, invited guests, departmental staffs, students and officials planted saplings simultaneously.

The Vice Senior General then encouraged planting saplings by attendees at the ceremony.

Moreover, the Vice Senior General viewed around the display of tree planting, establishing and conservation, making sediment control dams by using tree branches, salient points of a kind of Paulownia timber and establishing first-growing Malar Lukar timber strain and using at the ceremony where Union Minister U Khin Maung Ye and officials reported respective sectors.

13 kinds of timber species including gantgaw, star flower and gold mohur, totaling 2,220 saplings were planted at the 2023 monsoon tree planting ceremony.
