Italy's foreign minister welcomed the country's ambassador to Sudan after he returned home following an evacuation from the African nation. Michele Tommasi was onboard one of two Italian air force planes which arrived at Ciampino Airport on Monday with more than 100 evacuees. The planes had left Djibouti-Ambouli Airport, carrying evacuees from Sudan.

Officials said the evacuation operation involved army and Carabinieri paramilitary Special Forces personnel, who had gone from house to house in Sudan's capital Khartoum to find Italian citizens. They were provided with bulletproof vests and then escorted to an airport before the planes flew to an Italian military base in Djibouti. Diplomats, volunteers and expats were among those who were also evacuated on the flights.
