Peru was on Friday beset with flooding in its northern and central regional regions, produced by the pass of YakuCyclone. Corrales Mayor in the northwestern Tumbes department, said local authorities were still verifying how many people were affected by the storm, but at least 1500 lost their houses or were evacuated from high-risk areas.

An expert from the Meteorological Service of Peru explained that unusually higher sea temperatures collided with the cold temperatures of the Peruvian landmass, leading to the storm. Yaku, the name of the storm, is a Quechuan Indigenous word meaning "unusual rains."
