A firefighter died inside a burning building in downtown Buffalo, New York, on Wednesday after apparently becoming trapped by falling debris from a blaze that led to an explosion that sent flames and smoke into the street. The firefighter was reported missing shortly after 10 a.m., not long after crews arrived at the commercial building.

Firefighters responded to the fire in the downtown commercial district at about 10 a.m., Buffalo Fire Commissioner said. William Renaldo, Buffalo Fire Commissioner said "There was a mayday call, there was a structural collapse. The interior collapsed, our firefighters had to evacuate and unfortunately one of our firefighters was trapped."

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
