Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry arrived in the capital Damascus Monday for the first time since the start of the Syrian civil war. Shoukry was greeted by his Syria's Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad at the Damascus airport.
Shoukry arrived a day after a delegation of Arab lawmakers visited Syria and met with President Bashar Assad. The visits reflect a continued thawing of relations with Assad, who for over a decade has been isolated from most of the region. Egypt and Saudi Arabia are among U.S. allies in the Middle East that delivered earthquake aid to government-held areas in Syria.
