The head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus Sunday to discuss medical and humanitarian needs for those affected by last week’s two powerful earthquakes.
Tedros said the WHO will be sending another shipment of medical aid to northern Syria in the coming days. The meeting comes one day after officials from the WHO visited Aleppo, Syria’s second and largest city, which was severely damaged by the quake. The WHO had launched a 43 million USD appeal to help those affected by the earthquake in Syria and Turkiye, where the death toll has risen to over 33,000 people.
