Cairo donations for quake-hit Syria top expectations

Volunteers in Egypt on Friday filled boxes with donations to be sent to Syria. The items include essential food supplies, blankets, clothes and baby milk.

The donation campaign in Cairo gathered momentum as people were eager to give supplies and help with the relief efforts. The catastrophic earthquake that razed thousands of buildings in Syria and across the border in Türkiye became one of the deadliest quakes worldwide in more than a decade, killing upwards of 23,000 people.

Millions of Syrians in the northwest live in poverty, mostly relying on aid to survive with many families displaced by a 12-year conflict across the country. Temperatures remain below freezing across the large region, and many people have no place to shelter.
