A black ribbon was projected on Australia's iconic Sydney Opera House on Thursday as a symbol of remembrance and mourning for the Türkiye and Syria earthquake victims. On Friday, a search and rescue team of up to 72 personnel was deployed from Sydney to assist Turkish authorities.

The team will take with them about 22 tons of equipment and critical supplies, including tents, bandages, bolt cutters, chainsaws and drills, and will be self-sufficient. Australia Defence Minister Richard Marles told reporters in Canberra that a C-17 airplane carrying the team will head to Türkiye, and said Australia will contribute $10 million Australian dollars to the aid efforts.
