German Chancellor supports Brazil plan on the Amazon

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived Monday in the Brazilian capital city of Brasilia on the last trip of his South American tour to meet President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva to reinforce their message on environmental protection.

Earlier, German Development Minister announced that her government will make 222 million USD available for environmental policies in Brazil.It is the most important international cooperation effort to preserve the Amazon rainforest, and is mostly funded by Norway.Germany also pledged to provide 87 million USD in low-interest loans for farmers to restore degraded areas and 34 million USD for Amazon states to protect the rainforest.

Lula, who took office in January, pledged to end all deforestation by 2030. The Amazon is the most biodiverse forest in the world and holds 20% of the world’s fresh water.
