Sydney gets ready for New Year's Eve celebrations

Spectators began arriving at key locations in Sydney on Saturday morning for New Year celebrations near the harbour where fireworks will take place in the evening. The gates of the Opera House perimeter opened at 9am for people to claim prime spots.

Food and drinks operators in the Mrs Macquarie's Chair viewing site were also getting ready to cater for an expected 14,000 people. People were seen early on Saturday morning lining up to access the Mrs Macquarie's Chair location. In Darwin, the outdoor New Year's eve celebrations have been cancelled because of bad weather.
