Nicaraguans celebrate the patroness of the country, the Immaculate Conception. The “Purisima,” the affectionate name for the Virgin Mary in Nicaragua, is the most popular feast of the year for most Nicaraguans. Around town, Catholic families elaborate altars and offer gifts to the devotees who make a pilgrimage through the streets in this old tradition.

The highlight of the festivities takes place at the end of the previous day when people go from house-to-house shouting: “Who is causing so much joy?” To which residents shout back: “The Conception of Mary!” This religious festivity is celebrated in all the towns and cities of Nicaragua, being especially relevant in the city of León, in Northern Nicaragua.
