Sunak favourite for UK PM, Johnson yet to declare

Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak on Sunday confirmed he was planned to make a bid for the Conservative Party leadership.

Sunak is frontrunner to replace Liz Truss as prime minister, as he has garnered the public support of well over the 100 nominations needed to qualify for the race.

This puts him well ahead of his two main rivals - former cabinet minister Penny Mordaunt and ousted former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.Johnson has not yet officially declared his intentions, but he cut short his holidays in the Dominican Republic to return to the UK.

The Conservative Party has ordered a contest that aims to finalise nominations Monday and install a new prime minister - its third this year - within a week.
