U.K. Prime Minister Liz Truss resigned on Thursday, following a period of political turmoil over a widely-criticised budget, and senior cabinet figures leaving her government. In a statement outside 10 Downing Street Truss said "given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party".

She confirmed that a leadership election would take place, which would be "completed within the next week", and that she would remain as Prime Minister "until a successor has been chosen". Thursday's resignation makes Truss the shortest serving Prime Minister in U.K. history, having been in the job for 44 days.
