An emergency center to house some of the influx of migrants being sent to New York City is set to open, providing temporary shelter in giant tents on an island off Manhattan, city officials said Tuesday.
The humanitarian relief center on Randall's Island will start taking in single adult men on Wednesday, with facilities including laundry, regular meals, and access to international calls.
The city's plan is to bring single men to the facility once they arrive at the main Manhattan bus terminal, and to house them for a period of days while determining next steps, officials said.
Meanwhile, Ffmilies with children are being housed in a hotel. In recent months, New York City has seen an unexpected increase in migrants seeking asylum in the United States, sent to the city from other states including Texas and Arizona. Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency earlier this month, calling the increased demand being put on the city "not sustainable."
