A politician in Rio has made history by becoming the first transgender woman elected to office in Rio de Janeiro's state legislature.

Danieli Balbi, 33, hopes to advocate for laws on behalf of her blue-collar constituency, including those affecting the LGBTQ+ community, as well as to push for more public funds for culture, education, expanded childcare and other social benefits.

Balbi remains optimistic and says she will take a broad approach to legislating, focusing on income inequality and orienting government spending towards easing the struggles of the working poor in marginal communities like the one she represents.
