Hundreds of spectators and amateur bullfighters attended Bolivia's most famous annual bullfighting festival in Huarina, about 50 kilometers west of La Paz, in homage to the Virgin of the Rosary.

The celebration, held in honour of Huarina's patron saint, consists of a popular bullfighting tournament with the participation of 16 amateurs divided into groups of four who fight 70 bulls.

In Bolivia, animal rights activists question this type of event because they argue that, although the bull is not killed, it is disturbed and angered, which is why it charges and can injure or kill people.

The mayor said that precautions have been taken and that those involved have been asked to be trained.
