



At the invitation of the chair of ASEAN Law Association/Chief Justice of the Republic of Singapore H.E. Sundaresh Menon and the chair of ALA (Indonesia)/Chief Justice of the Republic of Indonesia, the Chairperson of the ASEAN Law Association (Myanmar) Union Minister and Attorney-General of the Union Dr Thida Oo and officials attended the 43rd ASEAN Law Association Governing Council
Meeting held through hybrid system on October 3rd. At the meeting, Union Minister and Attorney-General of the Union Dr Thida Oo said Myanmar, as a member state of ASEAN said that Myanmar will closely cooperate with the member states of ASEAN for the development of ASEAN region and is committed to the ASEAN Charter and respects its responsibilities contained in the charter.
Myanmar joined the ASEAN Law Association in 2012 and is joining the various undertakings of the association. of ASEAN. In addition, the ministry of legal affairs is collaborating with the other member countries in the legal tasks as per each committee of the ASEAN Law Association. Regarding with the Alternative Dispute Settlement Mechanism exercising in Myanmar, the new arbitration law was enacted in 2016.
The State Administration Council amended the Code of Civil Procedure on 11th October, 2021 and a court-led mediation process for civil suits is being implemented.
The Union Minister and the Union Attorney-General explained the legal developments in Myanmar, including the establishment of the Myanmar Law Information System (MLIS) Website to provide the people with easy access to legal information; conducting legal training courses for the personnel from the government ministries and organizations to have knowledge on the legal procedures in which the international law, criminal law, civil law, business contracts, constitutional law and other legal knowledge deserved to understand by the civil service personnel.
She continued that Myanmar ratified the ASEAN e-Commerce Agreement in 2018; it is also implementing the Digital Economy Road Map 2018-2025 and the e-Commerce Law and Cyber Security Law are being drafted.
The ASEAN Law Association is a place where the experts from various legal fields gather and only place where the legal knowledge and information can be exchanged. So, the results come out from this meeting are believed to facilitate to achieve the goal of One Vision, one Identity, One Community.
The 43rd ASEAN Law Association Governing Council Meeting approved the meeting record of the 42nd ALA Governing Council, approved the ASEAN Law Institute Annual Report 2022 and Work plan 2023. The meeting also discussed best practices for the implementation of Alternative Dispute Settlement Mechanism in ASEAN countries and matters related to ASEAN law treaties and enhancing implementation.
