Buckingham Palace on Tuesday displayed the new royal cypher for the first time following King Charles III's ascension. The cypher is an image that represents the king, and will appear on government buildings, state documents, and post boxes across the U.K.
It is used by government departments and by the Royal Household. The design was chosen by the king, and shows a "C", representing the king's name, enveloping an "R", representing the latin Rex, meaning "king". The design is topped with an image of a crown, representing royalty.
During Queen Elizabeth II's reign, the cypher was represented by the letters "E.R.", meaning "Elizabeth Regina" (latin for queen). Garter Principal King of Arms David White said that it was an important event because "it symbolizes very simply who that sovereign is".
