Broadcast Industry Development: NBDA holds 1st Coordination meeting

The National Broadcasting Development Authority (NBDA) held its 1st Coordination meeting at the Ministry of Information in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday.

At the meeting, the Chairman of the National Broadcasting Development Authority, Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn said that the Union Government formed the National Broadcasting Development Authority with Order No. 21/2016 on 25th January 2016.

The authority was reformed with Order No. 86/2018 of the Union Government on 25th July 2018. The National Broadcasting Development Authority will draft broadcasting long-term strategy project and policies with the council and the spectrum allocation project with the Ministry of Transport and Communications. 

Moreover, the authority must also supervise announcing to the public on the annual spectrum allocation plan that will be used for broadcasting industry in the country, drafting policies for the development of broadcasting industry, producing, importing, distributing and sale of broadcasting technology and equipment, satellites, receivers and related materials and the relevant technical standards.

The Authority and the Council must perform as the main regulators for the future broadcast industry but the council has not yet been formed.

The Union Minister said that it is planning to issue a notification to certify online TVs in order to regulate the online broadcastings due to the increasing number of broadcastings on the internet and social networks currently.

Later, the Vice Chairman of the Authority, Deputy Minister for Transport and Communications Brig-Gen Lu Mon made discussion.

The Director General of Myanma Radio and Television U Ye Naing reported on promulgation of Broadcasting law and bylaw, amending, progress of works and arrangements for regulating to online media, New FM Frequency Migration and broadcast with MRTV DTH system.

Attendees also discussed formation of Broadcasting Council, work programs, future plans and the requirements.
