New House members sworn in by Speaker Pelosi

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held a ceremonial swearing in for the three newest members of Congress in Washington on Tuesday. Two of those sworn in were the Democrats Mary Peltola of Alaska and Pat Ryan of New York. The third was the Republican Joe Sempolinski representing a congressional district in New York. Peltola becomes the first Alaska Native Congress member in U.S. history and the first woman to hold the seat. She will serve out the rest of the late Alaska congressman’s term after defeating Sarah Palin in a special election.
