Sarpay Beikman: 75th Anniversary Celebration held in Yangon

The Burma Translation Society, known as Sarpay Beikman, was established on August 26, 1947, and the association reached its 75th anniversary in 2022. 

A celebration for the diamond jubilee anniversary was held at Sarpay Beikman Building in Yangon on August 26th.

Deputy Minister, Ministry of Information, Ye Tint said "To conduct a celebration of the 75th anniversary of Sarpay Beikman in a grand manner, the Prime Minister himself encouraged our association to carry out this ceremony successfully, including the provisions of funds and presents for the attendees by the families of Tatmadaw (Army, Navy and Air). The Prime Minister respects and appreciates the literary experts for just participating in activities that are beneficial for country. Aiming to develop the literature, to strengthen in learning and studying the literature and to promote the development of the literature, this ceremony was organized in a grand manner."

Sarpay Beikman was established with the aims to translate books written in foreign languages, to translate books written in ethnic languages into Burmese, to translate books written in ethnic languages into foreign language and to print and publish the unique and excellent books. 

Deputy Minister, Ministry of Information, Ye Tint said "Sarpay Beikman is an organization that is effective to a certain extent to develop the Myanmar literature that is essential for the country. Literature is the basic needs for a country and also, you all must take constant learning. Aiming for the development of the national literature, efforts are being made to be able to publish good literature with the help of the literary experts. We also try hard in participating the peaceful and development of the country through literature with the collaboration of Sarpay Beikman and literary experts. "

As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebration, a literary talk was also organized with the participation of doyen authors.

Member, National Literary Award Selection Committee, Mya Hnaung Nyo said :I’m very excited to attend the celebration of Diamond Jubilee anniversary of Sarpay Beikman. If I have a chance, I would like to attend the next anniversaries in the future."

Burma Translation Society (BTS) was established on August 26, 1947 in the compound of Judson College in Yangon University. In May 1948, it was moved to the Sorento Villa building on No. 361, Pyay Road in Yangon which was later renamed as the Sarpay Beikman.

The present Sarpay Beikman building at the corner of Merchant Road and 37th Street, was opened with a ceremony on 5th may 1955, with the attendance of the then Prime Minister U Nu.
