Peru's health minister held an event to highlight the country's monkeypox prevention efforts on Thursday, during which various mayors signed a document agreeing to combat the disease in each of their respective cities. Peru has seen a huge increase in cases, going from just one on June 26 to 1,257 as of August 4.
There have been more than 45,000 cases reported in countries that have not historically seen monkeypox. The vast majority has occurred in men who have sex with men, but health officials stress that anyone can get monkeypox. The number of monkeypox cases reported globally dropped 21% in the last week, reversing a month-long trend of rising infections and signaling that Europe's outbreak may be starting to decline, the World Health Organization said Thursday.
