Sugar Cane Cultivation On The Rise: Hundreds Of Thousands Of Sugar And Cane Exported

The current price of sugar is on the rising and a viss is around 2150 kyats in Myanmar. In 2021, Myanmar has exported 200,000 tons of sugar cane to China. Also there were over 30,000 tons of sugars exported to Vietnam by sea trading.

The county has about 440,000 acres of sugar cane plantation per year and nearly 20 sugar mills produce 500,000 tons of sugar per year.

Win Htay, Vice Chairman, Sugar & Cane Related Products Association said “We can say that sugar price is higher than before and price rising is normal in June and July. The sugar cane is grown in Myanmar-China border areas of Laukkai and Chinshwehaw and is exported to China. In previous years, we exported over 700,000 tons of sugar cane to China. But due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we were only able to exported 200,000 tons of sugar cane last year. On the other hand, we exported 30,000 tons of sugar to Vietnam in 2022.  The sugar and cane industry has tremendously developed in Myanmar in these years.”

In Myanmar, most of the sugar cane is planted in Shan State (north) and Sagaing state. Also the areas of sugar cane cultivation will be expanded in the future, it is learnt.
