Peru's Castillo defiant amid corruption probes

Castillo is the first sitting president in the history of Peru to be investigated by the federal prosecutor. On two occasions, lawmakers also tried to dismiss Castillo for purported moral incapacity but did not reach the necessary 87 votes to move forward.

Maruja Inquilla, an environmental activist from Puno who attended recent meetings in the presidential residence said she is against unconditional support for Castillo. Since 2019, Peru has had four presidents. Castillo is the only one who assumed the role via an election in 2021.
