Kayin traditional white thread tying festival took place at the Union National Races Village in Yangon on Saturday.
After formal opening of the ceremony, Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Saw Tun Aung Myint gave a speech, saying that the festival is the auspicious ceremony of Kayin ethnic people which is usually held in the month of Wakhaung.
The festival aims for the reunion of the families and relatives, sharing friendship and contributions and safeguarding the traditional language, literature, culture, arts and costumes.
He added that the Ministry is working in cooperation with the related departments for the ethnic nationalities to enjoy the qual rights, to have unity among the national races, to preserve the traditional heritage and to promote the regional development.
He urged all to make cooperative efforts in building the democracy federal union with the leadership of the government.
The Union Minister and officials later presented cash assistance to the organizing committee, and honorary cash award to the cultural troupe. The white threads were later tied to the attendees by the senior Kayin people.
