Peru's Congress on Thursday denied a request by President Pedro Castillo to travel to Colombia to attend the inauguration of president-elect Gustavo Petro.
With 67 votes against a permit, 42 in favour and five abstentions, the Peruvian Congress rejected Castillo's request to leave the country between Friday and Monday, arguing that the president has five public prosecutor investigations against him, most of them for alleged corruption.Peruvian law stipulates that Congress must decide whether to authorize or deny a president the ability to leave the country.Castillo began his term a year ago, but Congress has tried twice to remove him from office without success. His term is set to end in 2026.
