The failure of four consecutive rainy seasons in parts of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia is posing the threat of starvation to communities in the Horn of Africa.According humanitarian relief agencies at least 7 million livestock have died across the region.Over 15 million people in the Horn of Africa have been impacted by the drought. According to UNICEF, over 7 million children are acutely malnourished due to a lack of access to sufficient food.
Felix Okech, Head of Refugee and Relief operations,WFP said "Right now the biggest threat to food security is as we are witnessing is climate change so efforts towards climate adaptation are really becoming more and more critical as we move along so climate change is a really big one. The drought cycles have increased over time and are stretching for longer periods. This a major, major concern."
Exacerbating the problem is that other regions in east Africa like Burundi have been experiencing severe flooding that are swallowing up towns and villages along the banks of the Great Lakes region. While drought is affecting certain regions, flooding is affecting others in what appear to be conditions caused by climate change.
