Hundreds of San Francisco residents lined up for hours to get limited doses of the monkeypox vaccine Monday.

The city held the monkeypox vaccine clinic at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital for people considered most at risk for the disease: health care workers, sex workers and men who have sex with men.

The mayor of San Francisco announced a state of emergency Thursday over the growing number of monkeypox cases. The city has around 300 cases, out of about 800 in California and 4,600 nationwide.

The virus spreads through prolonged skin-to-skin contact, which includes sex, kissing, breathing at close range, and sharing bedding and clothing.

Over the weekend, the World Health Organization declared monkeypox outbreak in more than 70 countries a global emergency.
