al-Qaida leader al-Zawahri killed in strike

Al-Qaida leader Ayman Al-Zawahri, 71, was killed over the weekend by a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan.

President Joe Biden announced the death Monday evening in an address to the nation. Biden said the operation delivered justice and hopefully to families of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the United States.

Al-Zawahri and the better-known Osama bin Laden plotted the 9/11 attacks that brought many ordinary Americans their first knowledge of al-Qaida. Bin Laden was killed in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, in operation carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs.
