More than 1,000 migrants arrived on the small Sicilian island of Lampedusa on Saturday via 28 landings in a single day. After medical checks they were taken to the island's migrant hotspot where 2,000 guests have already been crammed in to 350 available places.

Small and large vessels carrying migrants have continued to sail into Sicily, mainly from the ports of Tunisia and Libya. On Saturday another 438 migrants, including 117 unaccompanied minors and 35 women, disembarked at the port of Taranto, in the Puglia region of southern Italy, after being rescued in four separate operations by the German NGO ship "SeaWatch 3."
