Parade marks gay rights movement in Rio de Janeiro

Activists gathered in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro calling for democracy and an end to violence against the LGBT community.

The act happened in the anniversary of the Stonewall uprising sparked by a police raid on a gay bar in Manhattan on June 28th, 1969, a catalyst of the modern LGBT movement.Waving Brazilian flags in rainbow colors, the activists marched and chanted through the historical center of Rio de Janeiro.Brazil has an alarming number of violent deaths of people from the LGBT community, with a 33 percent rise from 2020 to 2021, according to the "Violent Deaths Against LGBTI+ Observatory."
