There were long lines at gas stations in Cuba on Wednesday, as authorities said an out-of-the-ordinary increase in demand for fuel, among other things, over the weekend was affecting the availability of gas on the Caribbean island.

This kind of phenomenon is not new in a country that regularly suffers shortages of food and basic products. Some drivers blamed the problems on the U.S. embargo on the island and on U.S. sanctions against Venezuela. Cuba refines Venezuelan oil. The shortage is crippling Cuba's already slack economy and forcing people to worry about how to get around.
