Austrian police ramp up pressure on unvaccinated

Austrian police have started to ramp up pressure on unvaccinated people by increasing spot controls in highly frequented public places and shops.

Police are not only checking people's vaccination status, but also whether people are following the new outdoor mask mandate. This mostly relates to popular shopping streets and other public spaces.  These checks resulted in 12 fines of 102 US dollar. Altogether police conducted 33,000 controls Austria-wide on Tuesday, with 180 violations of virus rules found.  On Wednesday, the Austrian health ministry announced a record high of 17,006 new confirmed infections.
