Beaches in Argentina's famed Mar del Plata resort remained crowded on Saturday despite record coronavirus infection figures.

COVID-19 cases in Argentina have skyrocketed during the first week of 2022, propelling Argentina to the top of Latin America's list of countries worst-affected by the new wave.

Argentina is going through a third wave of COVID-19, with an all-time high of 109,608 positive cases recorded Friday. The latest surge has been largely driven by the omicron variant, according to national medical authorities.
