Authorities in the U.S. capital have announced that that all students and school staff will need to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test to return to the classrooms after the New Year.

They say the measure is intended to deal with a growing number of COVID-19 cases, a spike fueled by the fast-spreading omicron variant during the cold, holiday season.Students who fail to submit proof of negative results of COVID-19 tests performed on January 4 will not be allowed to return to classes.Authorities will not accept any results for tests performed before January 4.
