Mexicans returned to making traditional visits to graveyards for Day of the Dead on Monday after authorities were forced to restrict access to cemeteries last year because of the coronavirus pandemic. Each year, on November 1, mourners make offerings for those who died in childhood by bringing their favorite sweets, foods, and pastries to the spirits of their lost young ones.
For Mexicans, Day of the Dead celebrations are a time to honor deceased relatives with vigils and homemade altars, a tradition dating back to the country's pre-Hispanic roots. The holiday begins Oct. 31, remembering those who died in accidents; it continues Nov. 1 to mark those who died in childhood, and then those who died as adults on Nov. 2.
