Hong Kong on Wednesday suspended classes, stock market trading and government services as a major typhoon descended on the city.

Heavy rain brought by Typhoon Kompasu could lead to flooding in low-lying areas and urged residents to take precautions.  Winds were blowing at up to 83 kilometers per hour and gusting at up to 101 kilometers per hour.

The storm is set to move across the northern portion of the South China Sea south of Hong Kong toward China's southern island province of Hainan and then make landfall in northern Vietnam. The storm earlier set off landslides and flash floods in the northern Philippines, leaving at least 11 people dead and seven missing.
