Protests erupted on Thursday between agricultural workers who have been blocking the highway and police attempting to move them. One protester was reported killed in the city of Ica.  The agricultural workers have been on strike since Monday, demanding better wages and working conditions.

In Pisco and Viru, trucks and buses were seen moving slowly through a crowd of protesters. The striking agricultural workers for the most part work in the grape vineyards that are used to make pisco and wine for export.

They are demanding higher wages saying middlemen hire them as day laborers without affording them a decent wage or vacation time. The daily wage per person is somewhere around $10 (US dollars) for a 12-14 hour workday. Newly sworn-in President Francisco Sagasti said his government would "investigate" the issue.
