A spike in coronavirus infections has put health authorities in Manaus on alert, prompting calls for stricter guidelines to limit the spread of COVID-19, which has surged 100% in October.

A state government decree that closed bars, river beaches and clubs that was due to end on October 26th was extended for 30 more days as an effort to curb the spread of the virus. Amazonas State Health Secretary said that COVID-19 cases have increased, but doesn't believe it is a second wave.

It had the highest death rate related to COVID-19 in the country, prompting the city's mayor to record a video begging for help from leaders around the world.

As the number of infections and deaths went down, researchers suggested that, together with other cities that were hard hit by the virus like New York City, Manaus had reached herd immunity, where so many individuals get infected it results in community immunity to the virus.
