The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Italy on Wednesday passed the symbolic one million mark, while almost 43,000 people have died, according to official data. The country, the first in Europe to be hit by the outbreak earlier this year, recorded almost 33,000 new cases in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, more than 50,000 people who tested positive for coronavirus in Britain have now died, official figures showed Wednesday, with another 595 fatalities recorded in the last 24 hours. Britain's death toll now stands at 50,365, the highest in Europe, with another 22,950 testing positive for the disease over the last day.

Spain's death toll surged over 40,000 on Wednesday with infections passing the 1.4 million mark, while the rate of new cases continued to grow, health ministry data showed. Spain has the fourth-highest death rate within the European Union after the United Kingdom, France and Italy.
