



One of the main reasons for the death of dolphins in the Ayeyawady protection zone is due to the illegal electric shock fishing.
In order to prevent and protect effectively from the electro-fishing, a one year inspection project to conserve Ayeyawady dolphins initiated on 1st September 2020 to 31st August 2021.
The project will cover Mandalay- Kyauk Myaung area within Ayeyawady River.
A combined team, with members from the Fisheries Department, the Wildlife Conservation Society, the Marine Police Force (Mandalay), other concerned organizations and locals collaborated together to cut down the illegal electro-fishing and the inspection was conducted for four times a day.
According to the officials, the inspection has been conducted for 2 weeks and 8 fishing vessels and 4 people were arrested and taken for actions.
According to the 2020 survey, 29 dolphins were recorded and 7 were reportedly killed.
