
The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 2.1 million on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Meanwhile, the national death toll reached 116,114, according to the tally. New York remains the hardest-hit state with 383,944 cases and 30,825 fatalities. Other states with over 100,000 cases include New Jersey, California, Illinois and Massachusetts, the tally showed.
According to Monday's reports, about 20 states in the country had seen increasing number of confirmed cases with the average increase rate up by 50 percent on a weekly basis in some states. The hospitalization rate in some states including Texas had seen an increase as well. U.S. top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said when there are more hospitalizations as the economy restarts, it is showing that the situation is going in the wrong direction.
