A key ally in the Costa Rican government resigned on Wednesday as part of a larger data scandal to hit President Carlos Alvarado. The Minister of the Presidency, VĂctor Morales, resigned from his post after an investigation into the alleged violation of personal data. Last week, the Attorney General's office raided the Presidency Ministry's headquarters.

Five other officials reportedly close to the government also resigned last week in the wake of the scandal. Speaking to media, Alvarado sought to distance himself from the scandal by saying those involved are no longer part of his government.
